A Teal built in 1937.
Galene was built for Capt. Bertrand L Ainsworth in 1937 at Luke Bros of Hamble to lines drawn by A. R. Luke in about 1935. She is a “Teal” one design and carried sail No. TL6. There is one other that I am aware of, No. 5, still in commission on the Hamble but she was not built by Lukes. Galene was launched as Thora, the name changed in 1948. An engine was fitted in about 1962 and changed to the present Yanmar in 1999. She is 30ft LOA, 21ft WL, 7ft Breadth and draws 5ft. I do not have any racing history for her but Teals raced successfully in Solent races before the war, most notably in the then new Round the Island race. A 1938 Beken photo of Thora shows her wearing 7 winners flags so she appears to have acquitted herself well. The 2006 – 2010 refit started with “a little softness” in the keelson and progressed to a full rebuild below the water line. “While we are at it” the deck was renewed with various other bits and pieces to leave her ready to race again.
Recent works during winter 23 / 24 carried out by Ben Harris at Gweek Classic Boatyard include:
New forward hatch, re-splined aft hatch, new coach roofs, re-caulking teak decks, re-caulking and splining of hull planks below water line, sistering internal frame, re-painting and re-varnishing of hull, cabins and spars.
